Certifications

Preparing for certifications like those offered by CompTIA, Microsoft, AWS, or ISC requires a balance between memorization and true understanding (knowing) of the material. While some memorization is necessary (e.g., acronyms, specific command-line syntax, or model layers like OSI), achieving long-term success in IT certification exams and the industry depends on your ability to apply knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Employers value practical skills, not just certifications.
Find Balance
Instead of focusing solely on memorization or understanding, try blending the two:
- Memorize foundational details (like DNS port 53 or the OSI Model layers).
- Use that foundation to explore practical applications (like configuring DNS settings in a network).
For example, if preparing for a CompTIA Security+ exam:
- Memorize the CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability).
- Practice applying the CIA Triad by analyzing how a breach might compromise each aspect.
