Feeling Overwhelmed by Money? Learn How to Take Back Control

Money worries affect more than just your wallet. They can impact your mental health, relationships and even your confidence in everyday life. If you're feeling overwhelmed, uncertain or stuck when it comes to finances, you're not alone – you can learn the skills to turn things around.
This blog post will walk you through some key tools and tips I use in my coaching sessions to help my clients move from money stress to financial confidence.
Step 1: Understand Where You Are Financially
Before you can change your financial situation, you need to understand it.
Ask yourself:
✅ How much do I owe (and to whom)?
✅ What are my monthly outgoings vs income?
✅ Am I regularly using credit to cover basic expenses?
Tip: Write everything down. Even if it feels uncomfortable at first, knowledge is power.
Step 2: Choose a Debt Repayment Strategy
One of the most popular strategies for tackling debt is the Snowball Method.
The Snowball Method
Start with the smallest debt first, while paying minimums on the rest. Once that’s cleared, roll the payment into the next smallest.
Step 3: Create a Realistic Budget
Budgeting isn’t about restriction – it’s about choice. A good budget puts you in control of where your money goes.
A simple budget has:
✅ Fixed costs (rent, utilities, travel)
✅ Flexible spending (food, leisure, clothing)
✅ Savings and debt repayments
Tip: Use the 50/30/20 rule as a starting point:
✅ 50% on needs
✅ 30% on wants
✅ 20% on debt or savings
Step 4: Build an Emergency Fund
Life happens and being prepared makes a world of difference.
An emergency fund is a pot of money set aside for life’s unexpected moments, like a car repair, a broken boiler or medical bills.
Without one, you’re more likely to turn to credit when life throws a curveball.
Goal: Aim for £500 to £1,000 to start, then build up to 3–6 months of essential expenses over time.
Step 5: Set and Track Meaningful Financial Goals
Dreams become achievable when you break them down into steps. Whether it’s owning a home, taking a holiday or retiring early, goal-setting helps you stay motivated and focused.
Step 6: Build a Healthy Money Mindset
Many people carry limiting beliefs about money:
"I’m just bad with money."
"I’ll never get out of debt."
