The Guest List Lie

An expert I know had 500 people on her list. She sent the invite to all 500. Three people showed up.

She sent the exact same invite the next month, this time to 10 people. Eight showed up.

Same person. Same offer. Same platform. The only thing that changed was who she was actually talking to.

Here's the lie the guest list tells you: the bigger the list, the fuller the room. It feels true. It isn't.

A list of 500 strangers and a list of 10 people who've actually talked to you are not the same asset, even though they both show up as a number in your dashboard. The 500 are names. The 10 are relationships. A relationship shows up. A name doesn't.

I call this the guest list lie, because it's exactly the trap it sounds like. You look at 500 and think you're rich. You're not. You're rich in 10, and broke in 490.

Here's the test. Count how many people on your list have replied to something you sent in the last 30 days. Not opened. Replied. That number, not your total list size, is the actual size of your room before you've sent a single invite.

Once you know that number, the move is simple, even if it doesn't feel like it. Message those people directly, one at a time, not a blast. Tell them the specific problem you're solving live, not "come to my session." Then post publicly once, for reach, knowing the public post was never going to be what filled the room. The 10 were always going to do that.

The guest list lie is comfortable because a big number feels like progress. It isn't progress. It's the same feeling as a full bank account that's all IOUs.

Count your real 10. Message them today.
