The Next Step Is Often the Hardest One

Over the week or so, I've been writing about self-awareness, direction, and why insight doesn't always lead to action.
As I've been reflecting on those conversations, one thought keeps coming back to me.
Maybe we've been making growth more complicated than it needs to be?
Not because the challenges aren't real.
They are.
But because we often convince ourselves we need to figure everything out before taking the first step.
I know I've done it.
We think we need the whole plan
I'll catch myself thinking...
- I need to map out the entire roadmap.
- I need to have every answer before making a decision.
- I need to wait until I have more time.
Sometimes that's true.
Most of the time...
It's just another way of postponing action.
I've realized that I don't usually need the whole plan.
I just need enough clarity to confidently take the next step.
Product Notebook
One thing I've noticed while building Compass...
People don't usually ask for a bigger plan.
They ask questions like:
- Where should I start?
- What should I focus on first?
- Am I working on the right thing?
I've started to believe those are much more important questions than we give them credit for.
A different way to think about progress
For a long time, I pictured progress as one giant leap.
You start here.
You work incredibly hard.
Eventually you arrive at the goal.
Simple enough.
But that's not how most meaningful things happen.
The more we've built Compass, the more my thinking has changed.
Progress usually looks like this instead.
Reflect.
Identify what matters most.
Take one meaningful step.
Repeat.
Not flashy.
Not dramatic.
Just enough momentum to keep moving.
The lesson I'm still learning
One thing I've realized about myself is that I often wait until I feel "ready."
- Ready to publish.
- Ready to make the decision.
- Ready to start the project.
The problem is... Feeling ready rarely comes first.
Momentum does.
I've found that confidence usually shows up after we've taken the first step—not before.
Wrapping Up This Chapter
When I started writing these reflections, I wasn't trying to create a series.
I was simply writing down the questions that kept surfacing while we were building Compass.
Looking back, I can see a common thread running through all of them.
- Self-awareness helps us understand where we stand.
- Clarity helps us decide what matters most.
- Action creates momentum.
- Momentum helps us keep moving.
That simple progression has shaped far more than these blogs.
It's shaped how we've thought about Compass from the very beginning.
What's Next?
Next, I'll shift gears. Instead of sharing another reflection, I want to share the story behind Compass itself.
Not the features.
Not the roadmap.
Just the question that started it all.
Because every product begins with someone asking...
There has to be a better way.
This Week's Reflection
What's one decision you've been postponing—not because you don't know what to do, but because you've been waiting until you felt ready?
